Being accused of spousal abuse is a very serious matter. A husband or wife who has been arrested for spousal abuse not only faces the possibility of conviction, but also the chance of having his or her personal and professional reputation forever tarnished by criminal charges. A person accused of domestic violence may be found guilty in the eyes of the public opinion long before the court reaches a verdict. It is therefore important to seek sound legal counsel as soon as possible to help you defend your life and your reputation against the criminal charges you face.

Types of Offenses

If you have been arrested or criminally charged for acts of spousal abuse, you may be facing the following charges in court:

- Assault: The act of intending, threatening, or suggesting an intent to cause harm to another person, even if physical contact is never made.

- Battery: Causing or intending to cause bodily injury to a person by making violent physical contact with the victim.

- Sexual Assault: Making a sexual advance to cause discomfort or embarrassment to the victim.

- Rape: Forcing unwanted sexual activity on a victim through threats or force.

- Aggravated Assault: Assault committed with a deadly weapon.

- Aggravated Battery: Battery committed with a deadly weapon.

Any of these charges may be included in a spousal abuse case, depending on the severity of the domestic violence reported. You may face one count or multiple charges in a domestic abuse case, which can range from a high level misdemeanor to a severe felony. If you are convicted of any of the above crimes, you may sentenced with a jail or prison sentence, heavy fines, probation, and/or other forms of punishment.

Defending Your Case

No matter what crime you have been charged with, it is important to know that in a criminal court, you remain innocent until proven guilty. An experienced criminal defense lawyer can help you fight your criminal charges and will work to defend you against an aggressive prosecution. You have the unalienable right to a fair trial, and a criminal lawyer can provide sound legal advice throughout your case and ensure that your legal rights are upheld.

Victims of domestic abuse reach out to the system for help in stopping the abuse perpetrated upon them. This can involve both healthcare and law enforcement. Yet, what actually happens, more often than most people know, is that these so-called “helpers” can be used to perpetuate domestic violence “legally” during divorce.

In healthcare, it’s the psychologists and psychiatrists. These healthcare providers are frequently manipulated by abusers to aid them in establishing false claims about the domestic abuse survivors that they batter and control.

Psychiatric Diagnosis as Batterer’s Club in Domestic Violence Divorce

Almost daily, I am sought out by a domestic violence survivor seeking help from being falsely accused of being mentally ill. In many of the cases, the mental healthcare diagnostics appear to be grossly improper.

But that doesn’t prevent a court from making determinations about the accused. In many of these cases, the battered mothers (and abused fathers) are faced with losing custody of and, in some cases, even the essential moments of simple human contact with their children.

Once judicial decisions are made, remedies can be added on and on, with no regard for the accuracy of the original foundation underlying the initial judicial decision. We have seen domestic violence victims prevented from having unsupervised or any access to their abused children because of a clinical psychiatric diagnosis.

The sad thing here is that those directly negatively impacted, like the protective parent and children, are unaware of this ploy during its set-up and ultimate execution. Often they go along with certain procedures trusting in their sanity and hoping for justice to prevail. Then, the day comes when they awaken to the fact that they have been re-victimized by their abuser’s manipulation of the psychologists and psychiatrists.

Psychiatric Re-victimization To What End

Now you’d think that if the batterer is getting a divorce and seeking to move on with their lives, then the victim’s declared mental health status would be of no interest to him/her. Wrong…completely wrong!

By establishing for “the record” that the domestic violence survivor is “crazy,” the abuser leverages their ability to regain and maintain control over the family…and most importantly, control over themselves, or at least control over their public image. Many people will tell you that the legal psychiatrics of a case are nothing more than to save face for the batterer.

The abuser seeks to walk away looking good and certainly not being an abuser. To this end, they must make the victim to be “bad”…”wrong”…”crazy.” Essentially, the abuser enlists (directly or indirectly) the healthcare provider to discredit the victim in order to invalidate who she/he is and what she/he stands for with respect to being a domestic abuse survivor.

If you are a domestic violence survivor and have been threatened with losing custody of your children and the credibility of you mental health status, seek to understand how batterers manipulate healthcare providers to establish false claims. And as you learn about the reality of what’s before you, find a credible professional to help you prevent this life-changing destructive legal psychiatric ploy. The sooner you become proactive in preventing the establishment of false claims, the easier you can prevent them from defining your life and limiting your liberties.

The first thing you need to do before you start an online dating relationship is know how to find out sex criminal history. Internet dating no longer carries the stigma that it did as recently as five years ago. Instead of getting dressed up to sit in a smoky bar, online daters choose to sit in their pajamas at their desk and make a killer profile instead.

However, skeptics still exist in the world of Internet dating for good reason, too. As acceptable and popular as Internet dating is, the secrecy that Internet dating allows makes it a playground for crooks and thieves. The success stories are plenty, but so are the horror stories.

For this reason, you need to know how to find out sex criminal history of potential dates. You need to protect yourself from fraudulent predators. We are all familiar with the white lies told online concerning height, weight, recent pictures, etc. Did you know that just as many people are not revealing the fact that they are married? Did you know that no safety net is provided to tell you if the person on the other end is a criminal?

It is up to you to find this information out. Try to get a first and last name. Find out where the person lives. At the same time, you never want to be too revealing about your own personal details. There is no need to tell someone where you work, give your last name, a phone number, or e-mail address until you have really gotten to know someone.

If you have children, you are obligated to at least check the sex offender’s database. However, this often doesn’t give you a clear picture of what a person could be capable of, both good and evil. You won’t get a report on their merits such as a Nobel Peace Prize or the last time they were recognized for being a “Good Samaritan”. Nor will you be able to find out from this database if your next life partner was convicted of domestic abuse, drug trafficking, or murder.

If you are serious about online dating (you should be), you need to know the best way to protect yourself. Try one of the yearly memberships at a national records database. You can find out whom a cell phone belongs to, a complete record of criminal history, or any type of court documents such as divorce records and marriage records. Protect yourself from online predators today!

Until relatively recently in human history, women were given a typically subordinate role in human culture. Even today, women face many struggles including lower pay rates and violent crime. There is still yet a need to empower women, and martial arts can go a long way toward it.

On the obvious level, martial arts provide a means of self defense against violent crime. Women are possibly the most common victims of violence, be it domestic abuse, mugging or rape. It stands to reason that this would happen, since most women aren’t as physically powerful as most men. Martial arts training can provide a more level playing field.

Besides physical empowerment, training in martial arts also provides mental and spiritual empowerment for women. While it’s true that many men are still programmed with the old patriarchal way of thinking, many women are as well. This may be suitable for some women, but others may want to break out of that mold.

The mental discipline and physical fitness that often goes along with martial arts training is known to increase overall confidence. This applies to men, children and women. There are few things more empowering than knowing that you can hold your own against anyone else, no matter how much smaller you are.

Of course, there is the sheer sport of martial arts, as well. Some women are attracted to athletic activities, and martial arts is a popular sport for women. There are women specific leagues and federations, as well as Internet forums. If you’re truly hard core, there are also mixed groups so you can match your skills toe to toe with men.

Overall, martial arts is a great way for women to empower themselves. For many, the “damsel in distress” should be a thing of the past, and many women today would do well to be in martial arts.

Violence influences all members of society. However, violence against women is an urgent problem that is closely connected to inequalities and power disproportion in society. It seriously influences the ability of women to achieve equal status. As a matter of fact, it is not only the great number of violence cases against women that threatens women’s lives, but the fear of violence that influences their everyday life.

Violence against women continues to be an urgent social and economic problem in the world with serious influences on our health and social services systems. Violence against women happens in every country all over the world. There is no country in which women are not exposed to some kind of violence. Women and children around the world, across lines of income, class and traditional views, are exposed to physical, sexual and psychological abuse, domestic abuse, inequality, and, in addition, lack of human rights. Worldwide, at least one in every three women is beaten, forced into sex, or abused in some way, most frequently by someone she knows, including her spouse or another male in the family. Violence relates to the lack of human rights, and to legal, economical, and public health problems as well. It influences all areas of the world and is a crucial problem that needs research initiatives directed at the improvement of universal understanding.

Violence against women is any act of gender-based violence that leads to, or is likely to lead to, physical, sexual or psychological damage or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, assault or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether happening in public or private life. Acts of violence are still taken place against women and children and new solutions that will always be required have the purpose of stopping abuse against women and observation of these solutions will be needed in all societies that consider women and children are not to be abused in any way.

There is an urgent necessity for demonstration projects, with appropriate evaluation, to define what works or does not work in different settings. The problem should be analyzed from the point of view of interpretive and critical sociology of studying violence towards women. Critical theory is a social theory that is concentrated not only on understanding or explaining the people conduct but on changing the society as well. Such a way in examining violence against women will have a positive effect as it will not only explain or examine the case, but change the present situation for the better.

Stopping violence against women needs strategies coordinated among many parts of society and at regional and national levels. In some states effective health programs have taken the first place in addressing violence against women. Though attempts should broaden beyond the health sector only. An agenda for change must contain interpretive and critical methods of studying violence towards women that means not only understanding or explaining people’s conduct but changing the society as well.

Being a person that has been in the media (print, television and radio) for about 15 years, there is one thing that I have learned, and that is that there are good journalists, and there are bad journalists – there are the ones that will step on another’s toes if it means that it will make their story that much more interesting. There comes a time when you have to choose whether you want to ruins a person’s life or if you want to just deliver the story just as it should be written –without all of the added, misleading information.
I often tell people that I should be rich by now and not because of any other reason other than, I have things on tape that could probably earn me a quick buck, and with celebrities spilling their guts to me, and not realizing that what they’re saying could very well ruin them. I was raised to believe that you really do reap what you sew, and while that is cliché, it is the absolute truth –what goes around comes back around, and it is because of that reason that I believe in reporting the story just as it was conveyed to me.
So, it has been all about R&B/Pop singers, Chris Brown and Rihanna, and domestic abuse. The picture says it all or does it? It shows a battered Rihanna, suddenly turning ‘good’ boy, Chris Brown into a villain, after keeping such a squeaky clean reputation for so long, all of a sudden, something goes terribly wrong, and the next thing that you know, in the public’s eyes, Chris Brown is damaged – losing endorsements and radio play, which ultimately means that he is losing money. Can we thank the media for that? Did they do it for the right reasons, or to sell papers and get viewership? Or, did they do it because it was domestic violence, and the awareness needs to be raised? I have personally lived in a women’s shelter because of domestic violence, so I know that it is nothing to play with, but why wasn’t my story told, or my mother’s story told – because she is the one that endured it. I say the above to say, there are so many women out there that deserve for their stories to be told, but the reality is that they are no Rihanna –which is an unfair, because telling the Rihanna story sells more papers, than if you would tell my or someone else’s story, that does not have celebrity status.
So, I say right now, haven’t written for countless of papers and having owned my own entertainment magazine, use your own judgment when reading and make your own assessments of what could have happened, and always remember that there are two sides of a story – you simply cannot believe everything that you read or see, unless you absolutely trust the medium that is reporting it.
Content provided by Kenyetta McKinney of www.grindmodeconnect.com and www.grindmodepress.com.

No woman should live in fear, uncertainty, or receive physical or mental abuse from another individual. Many women suffer the consequences of domestic violence and are at a loss as to what to do or where to go. They often hide signs of abuse from friends, family, and coworkers, and the situation worsens out of fear and embarrassment. Domestic abuse isn’t solely limited to the home. It can often cross over into the woman’s workday, in the form of threatening office phone calls, harassing emails, or stalking the workplace. These domestic violence facts will reveal to you the effects and signs of domestic violence so you can identify and prevent scenarios before they escalate.

Domestic Violence Facts:

In the United States, approximately 5.3 million women age 18 or older are domestically abused each year, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control. These women are abused physically, verbally, and sexually by past or previous partners.

Each day four women in the U.S. die as a result of domestic violence.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, domestic violence acts generally fall into one or more of the following categories:

Physical: The victim suffers physical attacks at the hand of the attacker. The outcome can range from light bruising, slapping, punching, and in a worse case scenario, murder. Be aware that most domestic violence begins with small and infrequent events of verbal abuse. This verbal abuse may then escalate into frequent physical attacks, with rough contact and serious consequences to the victim.

Sexual: More often then not, physical attacks are accompanied by sexual violence, or sexual violence is the end result.

Psychological: Not to be taken lightly, psychological or mental abuse, such as possessive behavior, the destruction of personal property, verbal abuse, harassment, and deprivation of money are other forms of domestic abuse.

Domestic Violence Fact: Domestic Violence Follows Women to the Workplace

Although domestic violence doesn’t appear to be a workrelated problem, it is. Sustained abuse, threatening behavior, and acts of violence do go beyond women’s home environment and affect them at work.

Domestic Violence Fact: 74% of US women who suffer abuse at home also experience abuse at their place of work, according to the Family Violence Prevention Fund study.

The domestic violent perpetrators use email, phones, and other workplace resources to check up on, pressure, or express anger towards their victims. They may even go as far as to show up to harass and threaten the victim’s coworkers.

Domestic Violence Fact: The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that approximately 20,000 workers are threatened or attacked in the workplace every year by their partner or spouse.

The effect? In America, domestic violence victims are absent approximately 8 million paid working days of the year. This is equivalent to 32,000 fulltime jobs and $4.1 billion in health care costs for American businesses. This is especially damaging some individuals, who find themselves trapped in low paying positions due to frequent job changes because of low productivity and absenteeism. Domestic violence prevents them from receiving raises or increases in pay.

Domestic Violence Fact: Domestic abuse affects a woman’s ability to keep a job.

Look for warning sides that your coworkers are suffering from abuse.

They become withdrawn socially.
There is visible evidence of bruising and assault.
They become agitated, angry, or cry when talking on the phone.
They receive frequent personal calls.
They’re absent or late often.
You notice a decline in their job performance.

Remember to believe the victim and encourage her to talk about the situation. Avoid pressuring her. Respect her confidentiality and do not judge. Inform her she is not alone and not to blame.

Learn the domestic violence facts and become empowered. You have the ability to change how domestic violence affects females in the workplace. Raise awareness for this concern.

“I know what’s best for you…better than you do.” Sound familiar?

If you are in an intimate relationship that has emotional psychological abuse, you know this message, whether delivered directly or indirectly. The message says, “You need to trust my wisdom—over your own—regarding issues specific to you.”

Now, when you are living in an abusive relationship, you even come to recognize the subtle reinforcement “routine” employed to help you buy into this propaganda. You might observe reprimand or the withholding of something you desire when you resist the other person’s conclusions/recommendations. And conversely, you are showered with positive “reinforcers” when you yield to the believe system. Goodies are given: whatever it is that you will work for is suddenly available to you.

This is how domestic abuse survivors are groomed to discount their inner knowing and ultimately come to lose contact with their inner wisdom. Eventually, they reflexively look outward for their answers and fail to factor in a wealth of hidden internal personal datum.

Now, take a deep breath and feel the fresh air in this new image: Flip the relationship, flip the partner, flip yourself—flip who knows what’s best for you.

Imagine being with your partner and searching earnestly for answers to pressing troubling personal concerns. Now stay with me, and see this person saying with his/her gestures and words: “I’m here with you, while you find your way.”

It’s that lovely? Can you feel the freedom to discover and become who you really are in this message? What do you expect this will do for you and for your relationship?

1) It will let you find yourself and be the “You” that you are.

2) It will help you see the relationship as a “safe” place to be and to grow.

3) It will let you know your partner as someone who lets you become more of what you are, rather than less of what you are.

4) This nourishment will be a cornerstone of what defines your relationship and it will serve to support you and your partner, presuming you also do the same with him/her.

If you easily identify with the first image as described: “I know what’s best for you…better than you do,” and you see the fresh air in the second image, then you are ready to create intimate relationships of mutual honoring and respect.

You are ready to shed your tolerance for self-silencing and the deadening of your own spirit. This readiness is the first step to your breaking free from domestic abuse. Entertain this new image routinely and cherish the impact that it has on you and on your perception of an intimate relationship—whether with this person or with any another.
